Luis Severino will not get the chance to pitch against the Yankees, his former team, with the Mets scheduling the right-hander to pitch on Sunday against the Miami Marlins before the second installment of the Subway Series this year commences.
It marks the second time this season the Mets have set up the rotation for Severino not to pitch against his former club. The first time apparently led to some ribbing in a group chat with some of his ex-Yankees teammates, but the right-hander has not been afraid to give it back.
“They talk s—t about me… like ‘you’re afraid of us’,” he said. “I’m not afraid. Right now, you only have two good hitters. I can walk those two guys. It’s always friendly competition with players I’ve already played with. It’s going to be fun and hopefully in the future I can face them.”
The Mets have not yet announced starters for the games against the Yankees on Tuesday and Wednesday but it’s likely to be David Peterson (who is not pitching this series) and Sean Manaea, Friday’s starter.
Both are lefties – a strategy Severino fully understands when it comes to facing their crosstown rivals.
“I think for some reason the Yankees are not that good against lefties this year,” Severino said. “I mean, you only have to walk [Aaron] Judge and after that would be better, but I understand the logic because of the hitters. [Juan] Soto is a lefty. [Alex] Verdugo is a lefty and Judge is the only big threat against lefties up there so I understand the logic.”
SENGA ON THE WAY
Severino was also ecstatic of the prospect of adding Kodai Senga to the rotation following one more rehab start.
“We’re gonna trade for an ace after the second half, it’s amazing,” Severino said. “Having him in the front of the rotation, I think once he comes back it’s gonna be great.”
