One person is in custody following a SWAT response for a possible explosive device in South Lubbock.
According to LPD, Cabot Chew, 56, was taken into custody Thursday morning in the 9800 block of Knoxville Avenue due to two warrants out for his arrest. The first warrant stems from credit or debit card abuse of the elderly in June. The other is from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in July.
LPD assisted the U.S. Marshal’s Office with the arrest due to Chew being considered a “high risk fugitive.”
According to LPD, with officers making entry inside the house, Chew made statements alerting officers to the possibility of explosives.
“With the safety of officers and the public in mind, LPD’s Bomb Squad was called to respond. While bomb technicians were en route, officers began evacuating nearby homes as a precaution,” LPD said in a statement.

LPD bomb technicians were able to locate and determine suspected explosive devices contained no powder. An additional investigation inside the home determined Chew was experimenting in making various types of explosives; however, no legitimate explosives were located.
Chew was taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center without incident.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and there is not believed to be an ongoing threat to the public.
