Cosplayers have taken over Comic-Con, with flocks of costumers showing up and showing out at SDCC this year.
After a few days of photographing the cosplaying crowds, Variety has discovered the biggest trends in the costuming world. And while last year the cosplay event included tributes to everything from “Barbie,” to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to “Cobra Kai,” this year’s event at SDCC is bigger and better than ever.
New to the scene this year were even more Beetlejuice iterations, as the ghost with the most’s sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” is set to open Sept. 6. The film, starring Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Monica Bellucci, is directed by Tim Burton.
This year marks the first regular convention for SDCC since the pandemic, after last year saw the SAG-AFTRA strike force nearly every studio to pull their panels from the conventions. The event, running from July 25-28, kicked off its first day with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman crashing Hall H with cameo stars from “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the “What We Do in the Shadows” stars and crew previewing the sixth and final season of the comedy and plenty more.
Cosplayers dressed up as characters from “The Boys” also took the convention by storm, as the fourth season of the show recently wrapped up. SDCC saw a new prequel, “Vought Rising,” starring Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash ordered. The two will reprise their roles as Soldier Boy and Stormfront in the series, which is set in 1950s New York.
