Farida Jalal, one of the most celebrated actors of all time in Indian cinema, became the quintessential on-screen mother in the 90s. Her portrayal of nurturing and supportive characters has endeared her to audiences for decades. However, beneath this familiar facade lies a versatile actress yearning for roles that challenge her capabilities. In a recent interview, Jalal expressed her disappointment at being consistently typecast as a mother and grandmother.

Speaking to Times of India, Farida Jalal acknowledges the love and appreciation she receives for these roles, she yearns for opportunities to showcase her acting range. Drawing stark contrast with her male contemporaries, she pointed out that actors like Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher were afforded diverse characters, from menacing villains to endearing comedians.
“My male counterparts got to do so much. From the late Amrish Puri to Anupam Kher, they played villains as well as comedians so well. They were not limited to playing fathers or dadas on the screen, but unfortunately, I have been given just one slot,” she lamented.
Jalal’s career spans nearly five decades, and she has graced the silver screen in over 200 films. Her journey began in the late 1960s, leading and supporting roles becoming her forte in the 70s and early 80s. However, her later roles as the matriarchal figure have solidified her place in the audience’s hearts.
Her recent portrayal in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has garnered praise, reigniting hopes for a new chapter in her career. The positive response to her performance has given her the confidence to seek more challenging roles. “I want to do something exciting,” she expressed.
