Mpox outbreak: WHO calls emergency meet to assess whether spread is of global concern – MASHAHER

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday called for an emergency meeting to discuss whether the monkeypox spread “represents a public health emergency of international concern“.
The statement came from WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus after mpox cases were reported outside the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“Decided to convene emergency committee to advise on whether mpox outbreak in African countries represents a public health emergency of international concern,” the WHO chief said.
Democratic Republic of Congo witnessed a rise in mpox cases along with a rapid spread in Kenya and several other African countries, raising concerns among health authorities. The World Health Organization confirmed that this virulent strain represents a serious health threat.
In Kenya, the strain was detected on July 29 in a truck driver who had traveled to Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, according to the health ministry.
