UPDATE: EPPD released mugshot up suspect Jorge Armando Lopez, Jr., 22,
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Police have arrested the man they say shot a clerk in the head during an altercation at a Far East El Paso Circle K store Friday night.
Jorge Armando Lopez, Jr., 22, is charged with Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury and is being held at the El Paso County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
According to court documents obtained by KTSM, police responded to Circle K at 12680 Montana Ave. at Rich Beem around 7:40 p.m. to reports of a subject with a weapon call.
Later, around 9:40 p.m., the suspect, later identified as Lopez, returned to Circle K, walked into the store, and threw a Whataburger drink at the clerk. Surveillance allegedly shows Lopez exiting the store while the clerk follows him outside toward the gas pumps. The clerk punctures Lopez’s rear tire and runs along a semi-truck parked toward Rich Beem.
That’s when court records say Lopez chases the clerk and shoots him in the head before fleeing south on Rich Beem.
Shortly after, two officers who were responding to another shots-fired call in East El Paso were flagged down by a man in the parking lot of a Family Dollar located at 12820 Edgemere. The officers recognized Lopez as the same person from the prior call at Circle K which responded to around 7:40 p.m. and took him into custody.
Documents state Lopez initially stated he shot the store clerk after he came at him with a knife. However, a review of the surveillance cameras reportedly showed otherwise.
The store clerk was last reported to be on life support.
KTSM has contacted Circle K for comment and has yet to hear back.
