Indian track and field star Avinash Sable suffered disappointment at the Paris Olympics 2024 after finishing 11th in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase final on August 8 with a recorded time of 8:14.18. Personally, Avinash had a promising run in the final which saw him miss a National Record and also his personal best by just 5 seconds. Avinash started off the race with his usual strategy of taking the lead, but his inability to maintain consistency and some recurring bumps in the hurdles cost the 29-year-old a major disappointment.
Sable tried to ensure a healthy push from the very get go, and was also able to maintain his composure till the 1000m mark, till which he held the 4th rank. However, Sable’s speedy push and approach faced a significant drop from that specific point, which saw him get overtaken by his opponents with rather ease. Sable had even tried the same early push strategy back in his heats, where he finished fifth.

By the 2000 meter-mark, Sable had already dropped to the 11th spot, and the Indian athlete had to be content with the same spot till the finish line. Despite being one of the many medal prospects of India, Sable joined the list of stars who were not able to bring home a medal from their much-anticipated Paris Olympics 2024 campaign.
The race saw Morroco’s El Bakkali defend his Olympic gold title, with USA’s Kenneth Rooks bagging the silver medal. In the third spot, it was Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya who bagged the bronze medal. The race also had a heart-stopping moment when world-record holder Girman Lamecha of Ethiopia suffered a heavy fall while crossing the land hurdles, and was even seen lying unconscious on the track. The Ethiopian was then stretchered off the track for medical attention.
Before coming to the Paris Olympics, Avinash Sable had shattered the national record for the 10th time. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Sable clocked his career-best run at 8:09.91 to finish 6th in the Paris Diamond League on Sunday, 7 July. This was the runner’s first ever sub-8:10-minute run in the event as he prepares for the marquee event, set to be held later this month.
