The casting of Ranveer Singh as the iconic Don has been a subject of much anticipation and speculation. In a recent candid conversation with YouTuber Raj Shamani, director Farhan Akhtar shed light on the decision to pass the baton from Shah Rukh Khan to the younger actor for Don 3.
Farhan Akhtar reveals why he chose Ranveer Singh to take forward Don 3: “The script needed next generation actor”
Farhan emphasized that the script of Don 3 demanded a “next-generation actor” who could infuse the character with a fresh energy and contemporary appeal. He found these qualities in abundance in Ranveer Singh, describing him as “charming,” “mischievous,” and brimming with energy. The director believes that the actor’s versatility and ability to seamlessly transition between different characters make him an ideal fit for the complex and multifaceted role of Don.
Farhan explained, “The kind of script that we were writing, what I wanted to do with it… It’s too early to speak about it unfortunately so I can’t into into details but it needed this next-generation actor in it.”
“He is mischievous, just full of energy, which is what this needs and he is… I feel when it comes to this aspect of his performance, it’s still untapped. Like I don’t think he has done a role like this, “ Farhan added.
What intrigued Farhan the most was the untapped potential in Ranveer’s acting repertoire. He hinted that the actor has never fully explored a character of this calibre, suggesting that Don 3 will showcase a hitherto unseen facet of Ranveer’s talent. The director is confident that the actor will not only live up to the legacy of the franchise but also redefine it for a new generation of audiences. He said that “except Lootera” and added, “His characters, because of who he is, they have been written for him, for that reason, are very external. They are loud characters. They are big characters where he has the histrionics and everything. Don requires a very different kind of performance from him. There is a certain holding everything inside that is needed for this character which I don’t think he has done so I feel, for him also, it is a nice challenge to be able to do this. You will see him in a different way.”
Farhan Khan said that Don 3 will allow Ranveer Singh to do “action, dialogue baazi but the personality is going to be different from what he has played which I find interesting with him.”
Don 3 will begin filming in January 2025 with Christmas 2025 as the release.
