A teenager recently was found lying in a Midlands road, and search is underway for the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash, the Sumter Police Department said Tuesday night.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, officers were called about an 18-year-old man who was found lying in the road near Ellerbee Street, police said in a news release. That’s in Sumter, a block from South Lafayette Drive.

The teen was running east on Hauser Street when he was hit by a car that did not stop, according to the release.

The runner is recovering at home after being treated at an area hospital for a head wound and other injuries he suffered in the crash, police said. Further information on the teen’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

No arrests have been reported by police.

Police said that a dark-colored car, possibly an older model Nissan Altima, was the vehicle that hit the teen. It might be easier to identify the car because it would have suffered damage to its front end in the crash, according to the release.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 803-436-2700, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
