PETALING JAYA: The post-disaster response is in full swing after a reactor explosion in Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu, said its MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Tiong, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, said he learned about the explosion and immediately contacted the relevant departments, the residents office, Fire and Rescue Services Department and Bintulu Hospital to gather more details.

“I have instructed the Bintulu Health Office to assess the situation and if necessary reactivate the Disaster Management Committee to deal with the incident.

“I am currently on an official visit abroad and have contacted the staff at the Bintulu Parliamentary Service Center to help coordinate the efforts,” said Tiong on Facebook on Thursday (Aug 15).

He said the factory explosion was severe resulting in 10 injuries.

“This is not the first time an explosion has occurred at the factory, which clearly showed that the factory’s disaster prevention measures were inadequate and threatened the safety and health of both the employees and the general public.

Tiong said the explosion had caused a stir in the Bintulu community and urged everyone to verify the authenticity of information received and avoid spreading rumours that could cause unnecessary panic.

“Any official information should be based on announcements from the relevant authorities,” added Tiong.
