Shaan Groverr, who recently stepped into the spotlight with his role in the comedy web show Dus June Kii Raat, opened up in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama about his career trajectory, the challenges he’s faced, and his excitement for the future. Dus June Kii Raat, which premiered on JioCinema on August 4, features Tusshar Kapoor and Priyanka Chahar Choudhary in the lead roles, with Shaan playing a significant parallel lead. Days after the show’s release, Shaan reflected on his experiences, offering insights into his journey from his critically acclaimed debut in Noblemen to his current projects.
EXCLUSIVE: Shaan Groverr reveals taking inspiration from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety for Dus June Kii Raat, calls it “very clean, family-oriented show”; recalls being AD on Harshvardhan Rane, Mawra Hocane’s Sanam Teri Kasam, BREAKS SILENCE on debut film Noblemen releasing on OTT
From Noblemen to Dus June Kii Raat: A Journey of Ups and Downs
Reflecting on his career so far, Shaan acknowledged that the road has been far from straightforward. “It doesn’t feel that long, to be honest. When it goes by, you don’t get to know,” he remarked, hinting at the unpredictable nature of the industry. Shaan’s breakthrough came early with Noblemen, a film that earned recognition at international film festivals. However, the period following its release was challenging. “At a very young age, I got Noblemen. It was a big opportunity that I got. And after that, I thought, okay, a lot of work will come in. But there was a big lump in my life from 2018 to 21, and in between COVID-19 happened,” he shared.
Despite the setbacks, Shaan remained optimistic and persistent. Post-pandemic, his career gained momentum again, with exciting projects lined up. “Luckily, after the covid, almost things have been amazing,” he said, hinting at an upcoming sci-fi web series where he plays the lead. “Red Chillies is doing the VFX for the show. There’s another film, which I’ll start very soon, which also I can’t disclose much about.”
However, it is Dus June Kii Raat that Shaan is most thrilled about. “More than anything, I’m happy about Dus June Kii Raat because it’s a dream come true character,” he revealed.
The Inspiration Behind His Role in Dus June Kii Raat
For his role in Dus June Kii Raat, Shaan admitted that his preparation was minimal. “I didn’t have any prep. But if you see the show, it is very similar to Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. That’s the only prep I did for that – watched SKTKW one day before my shoot,” he said, underscoring the improvisational aspect of his performance.
A Special Premiere with Family
The night before the premiere of Dus June Kii Raat on JioCinema was a memorable one for Shaan, particularly because he shared the experience with his parents. “This time was a little special because my parents were here with me. We had never seen any of my work before. They’ve always seen it back in Delhi by themselves, and I’ve seen my work separately in Bombay,” he shared.
Watching the show together was a new experience for Shaan and his family. “For the first time, we saw something together, and I’m glad it was a very clean, nice family show,” he said. “I was nervous, but we finished the show in one night… My parents loved my work, and I think that’s the best feeling to have the two closest people to you loving your work.”
Awaiting Recognition
Despite the positive feedback from his family, Shaan is yet to receive much recognition from the industry for his performance. “Nobody has reached out to me yet, sadly, but also because I think the show hasn’t created that much buzz,” he confessed. Nevertheless, Shaan remains hopeful that as the show progresses, so too will the accolades. “But now Chapter 1 is out, Chapter 2 will come, and then 3 and 4 are going to come out. There’s a long way. I’m very optimistic that, okay, I’m gonna get all those calls and all those praises.”
A Journey Defined by Choices and Influences
Shaan’s journey as an actor began long before his on-screen debut. He recalled his time as an Assistant Director (AD) on Sanam Teri Kasam, which he initially believed would set him on the path to directing. However, it was casting director Shanoo Sharma who recognized his potential as an actor. “Shanoo was the one who shook my head and said, ‘You’re an actor. Don’t take a director’s job and start becoming an AD just because you like it.'”
Nobleman and the OTT Revolution
Noblemen was Shaan’s first film, a project close to his heart, even though it was released directly on OTT. Reflecting on the decision, he acknowledged that it was the right move. “It’s a very dark indie film, so its target audience and its destination was supposed to be Netflix from day one. I was very happy that Netflix was becoming a bigger name. There was going to be a global reception for the film. It would have failed in India.”
Shaan’s pragmatic approach to the film’s release highlights his understanding of the industry’s dynamics. “Rather than doing a flop film, it’s better that it got global reception and global viewership, which I’m really happy about.”
Fond Memories from Sanam Teri Kasam
When asked about his fondest memories from the sets of Sanam Teri Kasam, Shaan reminisced about the bonds he formed with the lead actors, Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane. “I made a great bond with the lead actors. I keep sending them my work on Facebook. She’s in Pakistan. I was the artist AD. I don’t know if artist AD is a term,” he joked. His role as the artist AD allowed him to become close with the actors, a connection that brings a smile to his face even today.
