Carthage man draws prison term for shooting incident – MASHAHER

Aug. 22—A Jasper County judge sentenced a Carthage man to three years in prison this week on a conviction for unlawful use of a weapon.

Luis D. Chanas-Gomez, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court in a plea deal calling for a three-year term, and Judge Gayle Crane went along with the plea arrangement.

Chanas-Gomez was arrested Oct. 24 following a report of multiple gunshots heard in the 100 block of East Central Avenue in Carthage. Police found several spent shell casings at the front door and a witness told them Chanas-Gomez was drunk and started shooting a gun.

Police found the gun in a laundry basket where a witness had placed it after taking it away from the defendant, according to the affidavit.

A probable-cause affidavit states that the defendant has several prior arrests in California, Colorado and Carthage involving driving while intoxicated and both obstructing and assaulting police officers.
