The Reason Why Costco’s Membership Policy Change Is Becoming So Controversial – MASHAHER

If you’re not a fan of Costco’s recent membership card policy that requires customers to scan their cards with an ID check before entering the store as well as checking out, then you’re not alone. According to Costco workers on Reddit, this particular membership card-scanning policy is actually resulting in employee abuse from shoppers.

In this Reddit thread, a Costco employee admitted that members are frustrated by Costco’s crackdown on membership card sharing, and are bullying employees who are enforcing this policy at Costco’s front doors. This employee points out that members are frustrated by this, even though they agreed to the policies when they originally joined as members, and are walking through doors that say “Members Only” when they head to Costco.

The original poster, u/gasbottleignition on the Costco Reddit thread listed off examples of abuse that employees are facing: “Calling them slurs. Getting in their faces. Swearing at them. Threatening them. Assaulting them. Spitting on them. Complaining to them.” The employee then goes on to point out that the “smiling face at the door is a low-level employee trying to do their job. They don’t make policies. They have NO influence.”

The user writes, “I’ve seen coworkers reduced to tears, crying because a member decided that it was OK to take out their frustration (bully) on a woman standing at a scanner. We’re just doing our jobs, people. Stop being like this.”

While scanning membership cards is a new policy being introduced to Costco warehouses, the crackdown on membership sharing isn’t new. Costco announced last year it would be checking membership cards at checkouts (including self-checkout lanes) with a valid photo ID to ensure members aren’t taking advantage of these policies. This does include digital cards that are on phones, in case a member is using the app.

Because store employees are already asking for membership cards at checkout, employees on Reddit note that asking for it at the entrance shouldn’t be a problem. Nevertheless, even if these changes have been ongoing for a while, customers are still complaining to store employees about these policies and even getting verbally violent.

“Harassing an employee for enforcing a policy seems like a fast way to getting your membership revoked,” surmises one Costco customer. “I will never in my life understand the need to be rude and mean to someone doing their job,” another writes.
