Only three restaurants in the Jackson metropolitan area failed to pass health inspections during the month of August, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health.
As of Sept. 3, there had been a follow-up inspection allowing for problems to be rectified in order to earn a passing score from the MSDH for one, but not the other two..
Below is the only restaurant in MSDH District V that includes Hinds, Rankin and Madison counties that scored a failing grade of “C” on the MSDH’s restaurant inspections for the month of August in the Jackson metropolitan area:
Madison County
-
The Circle K, located at 100 Colony Crossing in Madison County, had a scheduled inspection on Aug. 28 and was cited for permit type 3 for two violations. One was that there was not a certified manager at the location. There also was no permit of last inspection posted on the premises. This was the 10th time this Circle K has been inspected since 2015, and the only time it has received a “C” grade during that time. In its five most recent inspections dating back to 2019, this Circle K has received a grade of “A”. All other grades, dating to 2015 were either an “A” or “B”.

The Zaxby’s, located at 154 Grandview Blvd. in Madison, received a “C” grade on Aug. 21 for not having a certified manager on duty. After a corrective follow up the next day, Aug. 22, the Zaxby’s received an “A”. Prior to the “C” grade on Aug. 21, Zaxby’s had received seven consecutive “A” grades dating to when the restaurant opened in 2018.
Hinds County

Rosie’s Family Kitchen & Catering, located at 4304 Welota Dr. in Jackson, was cited on Aug. 7 for one Permit Type 3 violation of not having adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible. A follow-up visit has not been completed, according to the MSDH website. In two previous inspections in 2022 and 2023, however, Rosie’s Family Kitchen and Catering received “A” grades.

The grading system:
A “C” grade is considered a failing grade for Mississippi health inspections. MSDH uses the following grading scale for restaurants, according to the MSDH website:
A
“No critical violations noted,” according to the MSDH website. “The facility inspection found no critical violations. Critical violations of the state Food Code are those more likely to lead to food contamination, illness, or other health risk.”
B
“Critical violations were corrected during the inspection,” according to the MSDH website. “Critical violations were found, but corrected under the supervision of the inspecting environmentalist. No further corrective actions are required.”
C
“Critical violations have not been corrected,” according to the MSDH website. “Critical violations were found, but some or all were not corrected during the inspection. The facility will be re-inspected, and all violations must be corrected in a time period not to exceed 10 days. The re-inspection date is posted on the graded report. If violations are not corrected in the specified time, steps are taken to suspend the facility’s permit to operate. A grade of C is also given if critical violations are repeated from the last inspection, even if they were corrected at that time.”
