Three people died in a crash involving two semi-trailers, a caravan, and two cars overnight, with part of the Bruce Highway remaining closed on Saturday morning.
Emergency services responded to the crash at Maryborough, where the highway intersects with Walker Street, about 10pm.
Police said initial information suggested five vehicles – two semi-trailers, a caravan trailer, a hatchback, and a dual-cab utility – crashed, with two catching fire.
Paramedics treated six people at the scene, three of whom died. Another patient with a hip injury was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition, while two others had suffered minor injuries and did not require further treatment.
“Sadly, at least three people died at the scene, and three others received minor injuries,” police said in a statement.
The highway was expected to remain closed for some time, with diversions in place through Torbanlea while investigators remained at the scene.
Anyone with information about the crash, including dashcam footage, was urged to contact police.
A further update was expected later on Saturday.
