Awooo! Universal and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for “Wolf Man,” starring Christopher Abbott as the classic horror monster.
Abbott stars alongside Julia Garner. The film marks an on-screen reunion for the actors, as the pair worked together in 2011’s “Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene,” Garner’s first professional acting role.
This is not Abbott’s debut in the horror genre, having starred in 2017’s “It Comes at Night.” Abbott also appeared recently in the Oscar-nominated “Poor Things” and 2019’s “Catch-22.” Garner rose to acclaim following her three-time Emmy-winning performance as Ruth Langmore in “Ozark.” She was also given a nod for 2022’s “Inventing Anna,” receiving an Emmy nomination for her turn as Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ limited series.
“Wolf Man” is directed by Leigh Whannell, the “Saw” co-creator who also helmed the 2020 horror hit “The Invisible Man,” which grossed $144 million at the global box office. It is also the filmmaker’s fourth Blumhouse movie, following “The Invisible Man,” “Upgrade” and “Insidious: Chapter 3.” Whannell writes alongside Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. Jason Blum is producing the film, a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production, while Ryan Gosling (initially attached to star), Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers.
Years ago, Universal intended for an interconnected Dark Universe to reboot past monster films set in a shared world. However, plans were shelved following the critical and commercial failure of 2017’s “The Mummy,” starring Tom Cruise. Conversations about the universe started to pick up again online following the critical and commercial success of “The Invisible Man.” Universal has since also released two Dracula-inspired films, the Nicolas Cage-starring “Renfield” and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” both of which received mixed reviews and were considered box office bombs.
“Wolf Man” is slated for release on January 17. Watch the trailer and see the poster below.
