The Chieftain’s Student of the Week feature and poll returns for the 2024-25 school year with exceptional student nominees representing Pueblo-area high schools.
This week’s poll features two students — one representing Pueblo School District 60 and another representing Pueblo County School District 70. Florencio Gonzales is a junior at Central High School, while Taylor Snell is a sophomore at Pueblo West High School. Both students have bright futures ahead of them.
Chieftain readers will be able to crown one of the two high-achieving nominees by voting in the poll at the bottom of this page between Monday, Sept. 9, and Thursday, Sept. 12. The poll will close at noon on Thursday. Here are the nominees.
Florencio Gonzales, Central High School
While actively representing the Wildcats in a host of extracurricular activities, Florencio Gonzales is fully enrolled at Pueblo Community College. He maintains an above 4.0 GPA, operates a lawn mowing business and works at S.S. Subs— a family business.
Gonzales golfs for the Wildcats, is a member of the National Honor Society, has competed in Knowledge Bowl and participated in Upward Bound. He also has generously volunteered with Kenzie’s Causes, Rake Up Pueblo and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Taylor Snell, Pueblo West High School
Last September, Pueblo West High School held a mural competition in an effort to beautify a large wall in the school’s common area. Weeks into her freshman year, Taylor Snell submitted a colorful, eye-catching design featuring symbols representing the State of Colorado, Pueblo West and activities offered at the high school.
After winning the competition with her design submission, Snell spent five months drawing and painting the mural on three large panels that were placed on the wall this summer.
