The re-release season is going on in full swing. In recent times, we have seen films in the last 10-15 years arriving in cinemas. Today, Bombay To Goa (1972) has also had a limited release in theatres, along with Padosan (1968). Bollywood Hungama in this article will share the long list of cuts faced by the former at the hands of the censor board.
EXCLUSIVE: The deleted scenes that were too BOLD for 1972 in Bombay To Goa; CBFC deleted Aruna Irani’s ‘vulgar posture’ in swimsuit, double meaning joke hinting at masturbation, and more…
This was a time when the censor body was called the Central Board of Film Censors instead of the Central Board of Film Certification. The U/A certificate was introduced ten years later, in 1982, and there were only two ratings – ‘U’ and ‘A’. Bombay To Goa was granted a ‘U’ certificate but only after the makers agreed to as many as 12 cuts.
At the very beginning, Mehmood was seen saying ‘Kothmir ke katte’ while holding the beard of a Muslim passenger. The dialogue was deleted. Some minutes later, a dialogue ‘Aap ki beti kuch nahin hilati kya’, which possibly had a double meaning, indicating masturbation, was replaced with ‘Aap ki beti kuch nahin karti kya’. A similar dialogue in the 11th reel was also axed.
The close-up shots of the heroine in a swimming costume came under the censor scanner. The shots ‘exposing bust and other vulgar postures’ were censored. The villain stating ‘Bada kuch public ke liye bhi toh hona chahiye’ was removed. The word ‘kapde’ was deleted from the dialogue ‘Main aapke kapde utar ke talashi lunga’.
The conductor stating ‘Yeh tera kela hai’ was deleted, while the dialogue ‘…India Gandhi ki government ki badi zaroorat hai’ was ‘completely deleted’.
In the scene where the conductor is tied on a height, he tells the driver ‘Has kyun raha hai, abe kuch dikh raha hai kya tere ko’ was deleted. A shot of the driver and girlfriend possibly kissing was asked to be removed along with the dialogue ‘Aaj jaldi se thoda pyaar kar le’. Lastly, the dialogue ‘Maine plane ki hijacking suni hai, bus ki hijacking pehli baar sunn raha hoon’ was also asked to be deleted for some reason.
After these cuts were made, the censor certificate was granted to Bombay To Goa. The length of the film’s reel was 3922.79 meters. In other words, the film is 2 hours and 10 minutes long.
Besides Mehmood, the film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Aruna Irani and Shatrughan Sinha. The film has been loved over the years for its comic scenes, performances and hit songs like ‘Dekha Na Haye Re’.
