S Jaishankar on Russia: ‘Taken extra care to look after each other’s interests’: Jaishankar on Russia – MASHAHER

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar lauded the “positive relationship” between India and Russia and said the two nations have “taken extra care to look after each other’s interests”. He also dismissed the assumption that Russia was gravitating towards China.

He made the remarks while addressing the Indian community in Singapore on Sunday. The Union Minister is currently on a visit to the city-state from March 23 to 27.

While replying to a query on how relations between Russia and India would evolve, Jaishankar said, “India should look at a country, not just Russia, from the perspective of that nation. So, tell me has Russia helped us or harmed us? Has Russia at crucial moments contributed or obstructed? Going ahead, are there gains to be made from Russia or is it only damage which will come out?”

“So, if I do my calculations from my perspective and my experiences, I will get the answer. And the answer in this case is that Russia is a country with which we have always had a positive relationship.

“Both India and Russia have taken that extra care to look after each other’s interests. So, I think we should have that confidence as we go forward,” he added.

Also on Sunday, Jaishankar said that he spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and offered condolences to the victims of the March 23 attack at the Crocus City Hall, a shopping mall and music venue in Moscow.

“Spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Conveyed our deepest condolences on the loss of lives in the horrific terrorist attack in Moscow,” he said in a tweet.

Earlier this month, the Russian Foreign Minister had recalled how his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar countered the West over New Delhi’s decision to purchase crude oil from Moscow amid the Ukraine war.

While addressing the World Youth Forum in Russia’s Sochi, Lavrov described Jaishankar as his “friend” and said the External Affairs Minister had questioned how much oil Europe had begun purchasing and stressed that India buying crude oil from Russia was a “national dignity”.
