Cessna Elementary School is on lockdown after a man allegedly shot his wife in the chest while they were dropping off kids Monday morning.
A Sedgwick County deputy who was in the area quickly responded. When the deputy arrived, the man was holding a gun to his wife’s head, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said. The deputy shot the man in response.
Both the man and his wife were taken to the hospital for treatment. They are in critical condition.
Easter reiterated that no children or staff members were hurt. After she was shot, the woman ran toward the school for help and her husband followed, but neither entered the school.
Easter said some children and a person from the school district were outside the school at the time.
The shooting stemmed from a domestic incident, he said. The exact details are still under investigation.
How to pick up your kids from Cessna Elementary
Parents can pick up their kids at the school. Police are encouraging parents to park on 45th Street South on the west side of the school and bring their IDs to have their children released.
Wichita police initially said it was not an active shooter situation.
The shooting happened around 9:14 a.m., a police official said.
Police had crime scene tape around a stretch of Clarence immediately to the east of the school. Several yellow evidence markers were on the ground. At least a dozen police and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office vehicles were around the school.
