A couple in Cardiff have been found dead at their home in a suspected ‘murder-suicide’, with their pet dog also discovered lifeless at the scene.

The elderly pair have been named locally as Steve and Christine Jefferies, who have been described as “just wonderful people” by their heartbroken daughter.

South Wales Police were called to the semi-detached house in the Tremorfa district of the city after three “loud bangs” were heard by neighbours.

A neighbour, who was very familiar with the couple, told MailOnline: “The police aren’t looking for anyone else and I’ve been told it’s a murder-suicide.”

Alongside the bodies of the couple, who were both in their 70s, was the corpse of their pet cocker spaniel.

All three died from “serious wounds” on October 5.

“Everyone’s in shock, they were a lovely couple, completely devoted to each other,” the neighbour said.

“What’s upset people as much as anything else is that their cocker spaniel was killed as well.”

The couple had two adult children and were well-known within the local community.

Steve, a retired welder, had served as both a referee and assessor with the Welsh Rugby Union.

Whilst Christine was believed to be in declining health and used a wheelchair, both still regularly visited their allotment to grow vegetables.

A rifle was found on the scene, the force has said.

Detective Chief Inspector Lianne Rees, from South Wales Police, said: “We understand this incident has shocked and saddened the local community.

“Extensive inquiries are being conducted to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident.

“We are awaiting the results of post-mortem examinations which will confirm the cause of death.

“Currently, we are not actively seeking anyone else in connection with their deaths.”

The force “thanked the local community for its patience and understanding while cordons remain in place”.
