Popular 90s actress Somy Ali has responded to a few appalling claims made by a journalist in a video which was posted on YouTube. In this said video, the journalist made a statement about the actress suffering from cancer, and also went on to allege that whatever movies she got in her seven-year-long career were because of her ex-boyfriend and superstar Salman Khan. While Somy refused to take these comments, she decided to give it back to the journalist.
Somy Ali reacts to allegations of suffering from cancer, undergoing plastic surgery and bagging movies because of Salman Khan; says, “I am baffled by such claims”
Sharing her thoughts on the video, she said, “I was tagged in it by a friend, and I was astounded and horrified. My aunt, my mom’s sister, died of breast cancer a year and a half ago. My extended family is on Facebook, and for a journalist to fabricate such cruel and disturbing lies about me was baffling. My mother couldn’t stop crying when she saw and heard the female reporter repeatedly say I have or have had cancer. I had to comfort my mom and reassure her that I get mammograms yearly and don’t miss any appointments.”
“How can a journalist say this when our first job is to conduct facts and thorough research before stating anything we deem to be factual. This is a dire mistake in the journalism profession, and that too means throwing the word cancer around like it’s some meaningless cold or cough that one has or has had. How does she have the audacity or even a conscience to say that about me. She has no medical records, nor has she interviewed me,” she added.
Although Somy Ali did come to India to meet Salman Khan, who was her crush, Somy refuted the claims made by the journalist about getting five movies because of the Bollywood superstar. “Salman has absolutely nothing to do with my career. As someone who went to India on an inane crush and ended up doing 13 films as a leading heroine opposite the biggest actors, from Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) to Om Puri to Govinda, fate and pure luck,” she maintained. “I attended the Roshan Taneja Acting School with Suniel and then moved on to Mr. Kishore Namit’s Acting School. I have the utmost respect for both my teachers,” she added.
In the video, the journalist even said that Somy has had plastic surgery done. “Then another shock came with the insinuation of my changing my looks and face through plastic surgery, which I have never been in favor of because I am not willing to do any voluntary surgery. Additionally, I am always told that I look ten years younger than my age by my loved ones, who have no benefit from me, so why should I go under the knife?. When I feel the need to do anything, be it fillers, Botox, or even plastic surgery, I will shout it out loud without any apprehension. It’s a norm and nothing to be ashamed of, and I commend people who are openly engaging in it as it builds their self-esteem,” she concluded.
Somy currently runs an NGO called No More Tears that assists victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Expressing her pride over her venture, Somy mentioned, “I think it’s the illiterate media who would engage in such heinous remarks on body shaming or even discussing a person’s looks rather than their deeds. As a L’Oreal Woman of Worth in 2013 and the recipient of two Presidential awards for rescuing over 42,000 victims of human trafficking and domestic violence, with our focus also being on our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, this is my legacy and what matters to me. The rest is unwarranted rubbish, which I would not pay attention to or stoop to their level of being ill cognitively and unaware of the realities of the suffering of our people universally.”
“I don’t deem this to be remotely connected to journalism. It’s tabloid fluff and meaningless. Also, why does it matter if someone is pretty or not? Shouldn’t it matter what our deeds are and what we leave behind to better our planet for its inhabitants? Malala Yousafzai, Leonardo Decaprio, Halle Barry, and people like Sonu Sood are the real deal. Also, our soldiers, who are universally at risk of being shot in the face to protect us, are the real heroes. The rest is just movies and a whole bunch of glamour that, in the end, doesn’t change the world. Sorry, call me boring for not having plastic surgery, and I am so sorry to that lady that I didn’t get cancer. As far as I am concerned, how she will face the mirror with a life so miserable to make up such a serious ailment in such a nonchalant way is on her, not my problem,” she concluded.
