A Transurban spokesperson said the cyclist had managed to pick himself up and exit the tunnel before the Incident Response team could arrive.
“Cyclists are prohibited from all motorway tunnels. We have clear signage at the entrance our tunnels advising cyclists not to enter,” the spokesperson said.
“Since January, we have had 11 cyclists access the Eastern Distributor tunnel. The majority have been food delivery cyclists.
“Transurban engages with food delivery platforms to discuss riders accessing tunnels and our motorways, and we willingly support their efforts to educate riders.”
It is illegal to ride bikes on many of Sydney’s motorways, but that doesn’t stop cyclists.
Last year a food delivery rider stopped three lanes of traffic in the M8 tunnel trying to move from the right shoulder to the left lane. In another incident last year a food delivery driver rode against the flow of traffic in the M4-M5 link tunnel.
Cyclists who disobey road access signs face a $302 on-the-spot fine and a maximum court-imposed penalty of $2200.
The penalty for not wearing a helmer is a $387 fine.
