With this achievement, Shubman joins an elite group of players who have also reached the milestone of 100 or more IPL matches, such as Steve Smith, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Brendon McCullum, and Lasith Malinga.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is on top of the list with 258 IPL matches to his name. Dhoni has scored 5173 runs at an average of 39.48 in his IPL career so far.
Shubman, who won the toss in his 100th IPL match and opted to field against Rishabh Pant’s men, spoke on playing the special match on Wednesday.
“We will bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, we’ve been chasing well in the last couple of games. Means a lot to me (on playing 100 IPL matches), have come a long way, still a long way to go, but the focus is on today’s match. It’s cricket, there’ll always be ups and downs, you want to play the way you’re good at. We’re playing the same side,” Shubman said.
In his 99 matches, Shubman has accumulated 3,088 runs, boasting an average of 38.12 and a strike rate of 138.12.
Shubman was promoted as Gujarat Titans skipper after Hardik Pandya left for Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 season.
