Shubman Gill lavishes praise on ‘accidental’ opening partner Sai Sudharsan – MASHAHER

GT captain Shubman Gill was full of praise for his opening partner Sai Sudharsan after the duo took down CSK bowlers in Match 59 of the Indian Premier League 2024. Gill and Sai were involved in a massive 210-run opening partnership off 104 balls against CSK which is also the joint-highest opening stand in the history of the IPL.

Speaking about his opening partner, the GT captain revealed that the team was forced to make a change in the combination after Wriddhiman Saha got ruled out due to a niggle. However, the move serendipitously worked wonders for the last season’s runner ups with both Gill (104 off 55) and Sudharsan (103 off 51) scoring hundreds.

“Our always style is to have the best combination in the team as possible. But unfortunately, Wriddhi Bhai had to miss out because of a niggle and we had no other option to open with Sai and me and it worked out well for us today,” said Gill in the post-match press conference.

Further speaking ahead, Gill recalled Sudharsan’s brilliant outing in last year’s final where he scored 96 (47) and stated that it was a great pleasure for him to watch him from the other end.

“It was great watching him. Last year he missed out on a hundred in the finals and having comeback and the way that he played in the middle overs watching form the other end. He’s someone who works very hard on his game and for someone like him to be able to execute those shots like that it’s just magnificent,” he added.

Notably, after a brilliant season in 2023, Sudharsan has continued his great outing with the bat in the ongoing season as well being the leading run scorer for GT. In the 12 matches played so far, the 22-year-old has scored 527 runs from 12 innings at an average of 47.90 and a strike rate of 141.28 with one hundred and two fifties.

Meanwhile, following their 35-run win against CSK, GT have kept themselves alive in the competition as they’re on the eighth spot on the points table with five wins from 12 matches having ten points to their name. They further need to win their remaining fixtures against SRH and KKR to stay in the contentions for playoffs.
